Reading Specialist Job Description 

A reading specialist is responsible for helping students achieve success in reading. They must instruct school district approved curriculum, develop lesson plans and document student progress.

 

Reading specialists must demonstrate and teach the necessary skills students must learn in order to complete assignments.

 

 

Typical Job Duties

• Ensure a safe and pleasant learning environment

• Evaluate the reading abilities of students and their progress

• Assist in the diagnosis of learning disorders

• Develop remedial lesson plans

• Direct the work activities of student aides and volunteers in order to ensure that work efficiency levels are maximized

• Address the individual needs of students

• Liaise with classroom teachers to develop specialized reading programs

• Demonstrate methods required to perform assignments for the purpose of providing effective reading programs

• Advise parents of expectations pertaining to the development of the student’s reading abilities

• Collaborate with school personnel, parents, and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum
