Audio-Visual Technician Job Description

Audio-visual technicians are responsible for the operation and maintenance of sound and video equipment and accessories which are used to amplify, record and display sound and images at concerts, conferences, exhibitions and other live events.

 

They may also be involved in the operation of sound equipment for speeches and presentations, or use video cameras to shoot images.

 

 

Typical Job Duties

• Set up, operate, maintain and repair various audio-visual equipment, such as; cameras, projectors, video recorders, lighting and sound mixing equipment and microphones

• May record meetings and presentations with video cameras and other equipment

• May operate spotlights and adjust amplifiers

• Coordinate graphics used in displays

• Provide technical support for teleconferences, webinars and distance learning classes

• May edit, copy and store DVD’s and electronic files

• Track and order inventory of equipment and supplies

If you are considering a career as an audio-visual technician, you will need to gain experience in the field. Joining an AV club is a great way to gain experience while you are still in school. Whether in school or out of school you can also try finding an AV technician who you can apprentice with; they will be able to teach you valuable on-the-job skills.

Smaller companies will have you work in all aspects of technology, whereas larger companies might have you focus on a particular aspect of audio-visual technology. Any apprenticing and education you receive will help you determine your strengths, skills and preferences.
