Seamstress Job Description

Seamstresses fabricate women’s garments such as dresses, coats and suits according to customer specifications and measurements. They must discuss the type of material, pattern or style to be used in the making of the garment.

 

 

Seamstress Job Duties

• Confer with customers to determine types of materials and garment styles desired

• Develop, copy, or adapt designs for garments, and design patterns to fit measurements, applying knowledge of garment design, construction, styling, and fabric

• Position patterns of garment parts on fabric, and cut fabric along outlines, using scissors

• Perform and record measurements of customer

• Estimate cost of garment based on quality and quantity of materials to be used, as well as how much time it will take to make

• Examine tags on existing garments to determine any adjustments that need to be made

• Sew garments using needle and thread or sewing machine

• Trim excess material

• Insert padding and shaping materials
