Historian Job Description

Historians are responsible for documenting, researching, analyzing and interpreting human history.

They may specialize in various areas, such as the history of a particular country, region or groups of people. Historians may also specialize in the history of a certain aspect of the past, such as technological or political history. 

Typical Job Duties

• Gather, study and analyze information from published sources, as well as original documents

• Prepare manuscripts for publication, in support of public programming or to assist with the development of exhibits at historic sites and museums

• May conduct historical research as a basis for the establishment, conservation and reconstruction of national parks and historic sites

• May teach and conduct research in colleges, universities, museums or research agencies

• May conduct historical research as as an expert witness in legal cases

• May conduct historical research for television programs or films
