Typical Job Duties

• Research background information pertaining to news stories in order to provide the most complete information to the public

• Check reference materials, such as books, news files, or public records, to obtain relevant facts

• Review and evaluate notes taken about event aspects in order to isolate pertinent facts and details

• Determine the emphasis, length and format of the story

• Revise work to meet editorial requirements

• Report on political and governmental news stories and events

• Receive assignments from editor

• Evaluate news item leads

• Confer with editor regarding the establishment of story priorities and positions
