Resume Tips
Finding a Job after Graduation
Finding a job after graduation can be hard enough, not to mention trying to determine the career path you want to start out on. One major question you have to ask yourself, and a question that will be asked to you as your graduation draws closer is, "What are you going to do now?" For some the answer is to pursue further education in the form of a Master's Degree or some other degree program. Some opt to take a break to relax, travel, and not jump right into a career-focused life. Some have already had their jobs lined up prior to graduation through internships, practicum...
Resume Tip - Be Posting Specific
When applying for a position, pay very close attention to the terminology used by the employer. Be absolutely sure to mimic that terminology in your resume. For example, if they are seeking a candidate with a specific skill set, make sure you include those skills among those listed on your resume (if they apply to you that is). It may seem like a hassle to tailor your resume specific to each employer and each specific position, but you will receive many more call backs for the amount of resumes you submit...which means you won't have to submit as many resumes!
Resume Tip - Apply Direct
Feel like your resume has been lost in a black hole?
Often times when you apply for a job, it feels like your resume has been sucked into a black hole, and will never be seen again. To avoid this create a list of companies and apply directly to these companies instead of job hiring sites where resumes can get overlooked.
Also, let your contacts know you're job hunting. The best reference - a personal reference - she may share with her friend - who may share with his friend - GET IT?... GOOD!
Resume Tip - Ask for Assistance
Sometimes we can all use help!
If you are having a hard time creating your resume, or if you feel it could be stronger, consider visiting your Student Resource Center at your school. They may be able to help you or recommend who can. Who cares if you have to ask for help! All that matters is you land the job, right?
Resume Tip - use a proper e-mail address
There is nothing more off-putting for a potential employer than when they see an e-mail address such as 'studboy69@anywhere.com'.
An interview can go very well and the potential employer might fall in love with the idea of hiring you, when all of a sudden they say, "I will e-mail you the details of your 2nd interview." You might respond, "Great! My e-mail address is listed at the very top of my resume!" The employer then takes a peek at the e-mail address you've provided and takes a second to re-evaluate...
Resume Tip - Be Honest
I do speak Spanish... Tacos...Margharita...see!!
This seems like a no brainer, but it's pretty funny how people will lie on their resumes. Even the smallest of lie should be avoided. Apart from being dishonest, most HR departments will do a background check, or even worst...test your "ability". Keep your credibility in good standing and show off what you really have.
Resume Tip
Get your mom, dad or even your great grandma to proofread your resume! It's unbelievable how many resumes are submitted with errors...even in the applicants own name! It's difficult to emphasize the importance of RE-proofereading your resume. One small typo and your chances of landing your dream job could fly out the window. Feel free to reach out to an old professor or instructor, they will likely be very happy to help.
Resume Tip
You're not writing a resume to get A job...you're writing a resume to get THAT job. People often make the mistake of writing a resume to land any job. As a result they end up with a piece that makes them look desperate and sloppy, instead of making them look like a suitable candidate. Take the extra time to modify your content, knowing that your objective is to land a SPECIFIC POSITION!! Trust us, it's worth it.
