A publishing rights manager is responsible for developing and overseeing the publishing rights of books and similar publications in order to ensure the publishing company they represent achieves maximum profit.

 

They may be responsible for arranging foreign rights, as well as the sale of rights to book clubs, or for North American editions, translations, audio formats, electronic formats or extracts.

 

 

Typical Job Duties

• Liaise with publishers, editors and production teams

• Negotiate translation rights

• Ensure contacts are informed about new publications

• Prepare pitch letters to new contacts

• Identify new publication opportunities and initiate contact

• Use market knowledge to submit proposals for new publications to editorial team

• Undertake high-level negotiations with relevant partners regarding complex legal agreements and contracts
