How to answer the interview question, “What did you most enjoy/dislike about your last job?”

During a job interview, when an employer asks you what it was about your last/current job that you most enjoyed or disliked, they are trying to find out if there are similar elements within your prospective new posting that you may find equally great or terrible. In other words it will help them determine if you are a good fit for the role and the company.

They will likely be trying to extract information from you one of the following topics:

  • How will you fit into their corporate culture? (Are you a team player, or is there an I in T.E.A.M?)
  • Were there elements of the work itself you disliked? (How much of a workload/how much stress can you handle?)
  • Did you dislike the manager, the people? (How well do you play with others/do you have problems with authority?)
  •

Below is a great response you can use to communicate a positive attitude towards your previous employer when asked what it is you enjoyed:

“I enjoyed the people I worked with. It was a fun and friendly atmosphere, and I actually looked forward to going to work every morning. I also felt our leadership was exceptional; they knew all of the employees on a first name basis, and consistently put in an effort to make personal connections. I also appreciated the fact that our office had a positive impact in the community, by performing public outreach activities.”

The above response is a great one to give, because it thoroughly communicates your positive attitude towards, and immersion into, the culture of a workplace. It also subtly communicates what you expect from an employer!

The employer will also want to know what you disliked about your last or current job. If you answer this question in a positive manner, then you probably don’t have anything to worry about. Remember: BE POSITIVE, speaking poorly of your previous/current employer won’t reflect well on you:

Below is an example of a response you can give when asked what it was about your previous role that you disliked:

“While I did enjoy working there and appreciate the skills and knowledge I gained while with the company, I feel that my skill set can be better utilized elsewhere, where my capabilities are more recognized, and there is better opportunity for growth.”

The above is a great response, as it showcases your ambition and self-confidence, without belittling your former workplace.
