How to answer the interview question, "What was your biggest accomplishment or failure in your last job?"

During a job interview, you may find the employer asking you what your biggest accomplishment or failure was during your last job. The employer is looking for assurance that you will be able transfer your skill set to your new role, and be able to realize similar success, should they choose to hire you. Having said that, the best way to answer this question is to give an example of something you accomplished that is directly related to your prospective new role. Show the interviewer that what you accomplished will be beneficial to their organization by providing an example of an accomplishment that relates to the job description of the job you are interviewing for.

EXAMPLE: If the job description says, "Meet quarterly sales quotas" you can say, "My greatest accomplishment in my previous role was consistently surpassing my sales quotas by 20-25%".

TIP: Remember not to falsify any information, only provide an example if it actually happened and it is relevant to your new job.

If you can't think of anything you failed at, or you are positive you didn't fail at anything, don't be afraid to say so. If you can think of an example where you failed, make sure it's a minor failure and that you explain how you were able to turn it into a positive situation.

EXAMPLE: If you were working on a project that was behind deadline, explain to the interviewer how you adjusted the workload and the timeline to get back on track and ahead of schedule.

TIP: When interviewing, ALWAYS be cognizant of the job you are interviewing for, and the responsibilities and duties thereof
