A legislator is an elected official who works for a lawmaking body in his or her state or province. The breadth of a legislator’s duties may vary by region.
Legislator Job Duties
- When legislative body is in session, legislators create and process bills that will become provincial or state law if approved
- Legislators also form issue-related committees and subcommittees in order to discuss, debate and read bills and amendments
- Confer with political researchers
- Create and ratify provincial or state laws and regulations
- Many legislators also work as business owners or attorneys; few perform legislative duties on a full time basis
