Child Psychotherapist Job Description

Child and adolescent psychotherapists are responsible for providing psychoanalytic treatment for children and adolescents with emotional and behavioural difficulties. They must carefully observe their patients and respond to what they might be communicating through their behaviour and play.

 

 

Child Psychotherapist Job Duties

• Maintain current knowledge of research and development within the field

• Assess the behavioural and emotional needs of children and adolescents with difficulties in these areas

• Plan service delivery based on the needs assessment of a child or adolescent

• Offer training, consultation and supervision to other professionals who work with children and families in the community, including health visitors, social workers, teachers, midwives and nurses

• Liaise with other professionals, such as teachers, children’s service agents, nurses and others, in planning how best to help a child and the child's family

• Provide short and long-term interventions with children, young people and/or parents

• Work as part of multidisciplinary teams comprising psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, pediatric nurses, special educational needs coordinators, family therapists and community psychiatric nurses
