Medical Records Specialist Job Description

Medical records specialists are responsible for maintaining the accuracy and security of medical records, such as those pertaining to a patient’s medical history, test results and other health information. 

 

 

Medical Records Specialist Job Duties

  • Notify physicians if any medical report details need to be clarified
  • Assign codes to categorize diagnosis and procedures
  • If employed as a cancer registrar, must assign codes to records for the different cancer diagnosis and treatments
  • Ensure accurate and proper documentation of a patient’s medical history
  • If employed in a private health care system, may work in the coding of medical records for financial reimbursement
