In general, there is no specific educational background you need to sell software. However, depending on the role, a background in certain areas could be a huge advantage. 

 

For example, if you will be selling legal software, a background in law or legal studies might be beneficial. Or if you will be selling accounting software, a background in accounting, finance or general business would be relevant. 

 

Having a degree related to computer or software engineering would also be of great benefit, as it would help you gain a deep technical understanding of the software you are selling, regardless of the sector of industry it’s marketed towards.

 

 

 

What Does a Software Sales Representative Do?

A software sales representative is responsible for helping to maintain and grow their employer’s client base by selling software and related products to new and existing clients (accounts) and providing excellent customer service to those accounts. 

 

They must research and contact sales leads, negotiate and close sales, and facilitate technical and general support for clients.

• Delivering presentations of the software and related products to all levels of prospective and current client accounts

• Meeting annual sales goals and targets

• Maintaining the company’s contact database management with up-to-date contact details

• Producing weekly sales reports 

• Providing feedback of potential customers and members to facilitate service delivery excellence

• Ensuring effective internal communication within the Sales, Marketing team and Customer Support and across the company

• Negotiating complex agreements and expediting the sales cycle

• Identifying new opportunities and verticals to establish expertise in growing and emerging technologies

• Facilitating customer service and technical support for clients

 

 

What Work Experience Will I Need?

In some cases, particularly for entry-level roles, sales experience may not be a formal requirement. Just initiative and the ability to sell yourself, and your potential, to your employer. 

 

Having said that, previous experience in a sales environment can greatly improve your chances of securing a job. If you can demonstrate evidence of exceeding sales targets and building successful customer relationships in previous roles, that will certainly impress potential employers.
