In film production, story editors tailor stories to suit the vision of those in charge of representing the story. This involves cutting characters, adding or removing subplots or revising scenes for practical reasons, such as budget inadequacies. In television production, story editors ensure that episodes written by multiple freelance writers fit well  with the surrounding stories and the overall storyline of the series.

 

 

Story Editor Job Duties

  • Hire, assign and supervise staff writers
  • Provide instruction and direction regarding necessary changes, additions and corrections
  • Review and evaluate the work of freelance writers, as well as samples presented by agents
  • Select written material that is compatible with established styles, concepts, and formats
  • Recommend the purchase of written material thought to be suitable for script development
  • Read stories and other material obtained from various sources and evaluate potential for development into scripts
