Art Historian Job Description

Art historians are responsible for evaluating, restoring and preserving historical artifacts and works of art. Art galleries, museums, historical societies and non-profit organizations may employ them. The work of art historians is mainly focused on archaeological finds, historical documents, as well as fine and decorative arts.

Typical Job Duties

• Document, evaluate, manage and preserve fine art, sculptures, artifacts and archaeological specimens

• Use specialized equipment such as radiographic imaging equipment

• Use specialized processes, such as carbon dating and chemical testing

• Develop treatment plans to restore artifacts and reduce environmental deterioration

• Plan and conduct research in area of specialty

• May author papers for publication
